CT Engineering Group participates in the commissioning of the Wikinger and East Anglia One offshore wind farms

Offshore wind energy has become one of the leading technologies driving the energy transition toward global decarbonization goals. Its high generation capacity, combined with more consistent wind resources than those available onshore, makes offshore wind farms critical energy infrastructures capable of delivering a sustainable, reliable, and efficient power supply.

Aligned with these objectives, one of our key clients, Iberdrola, is leading the development of some of Europe’s most important offshore wind projects. Following the construction of West of Duddon Sands, ScottishPower, part of the Iberdrola Group, launched two major offshore wind farms—Wikinger (Germany) and East Anglia One (UK)—further strengthening its international leadership in offshore wind development.

Wikinger: A Landmark Project in Europe

Located in the Baltic Sea, approximately 30–35 kilometers northeast of the island of Rügen, Germany, the Wikinger offshore wind farm has an installed capacity of 350 MW, consisting of 70 offshore wind turbines rated at 5 MW each, spread across an area of approximately 50 km².

Since entering commercial operation, the wind farm has been capable of supplying clean electricity to approximately 350,000 households, making a significant contribution to emissions reduction by avoiding an estimated 600,000 tons of CO₂ annually compared with conventional power generation sources.

The development and construction of the wind farm represented an investment of approximately €1.4 billion, posing a major technical challenge that included the installation of jacket foundations, an offshore substation, and a complex network of submarine cables to connect the facility to the German power grid.

East Anglia One: Key Figures from a Landmark Offshore Project

Located approximately 43 kilometers off the coast of Suffolk, United Kingdom, East Anglia One is one of the most significant offshore wind projects developed in Europe, both in terms of its scale and its contribution to the energy transition.

The wind farm has an installed capacity of 714 MW, distributed across 102 wind turbines rated at 7 MW each, capable of supplying clean electricity to approximately 630,000 UK households. Thanks to this generation capacity, the facility prevents the emission of approximately one million tons of CO₂ annually.

East Anglia One entered commercial operation in 2020, following an investment of approximately £2.5 billion, and has since demonstrated strong operational performance while maintaining high standards of reliability and safety.

Large-Scale Projects, Major Challenges

The technical complexity of projects of this scale requires seamless integration between protection, control, and operational systems before they are brought into service. As with previous projects, Iberdrola relied on CT’s expertise and experience to become part of the commissioning team.

Our engineers were involved in supervising and carrying out the functional testing of the protection and control systems, as well as integrating these systems with the primary equipment of the facilities, ensuring the reliable operation of the entire installation.

Despite the challenges and years of work carried out offshore, the commissioning of both projects was completed according to the planned schedule, resulting in safe, reliable start-ups fully aligned with each project’s objectives.
