The company is strengthening its collaboration with Iberdrola through engineering services, protection coordination studies, and protection testing at strategically important hydroelectric facilities.

This year, Iberdrola celebrates its 125th anniversary, marking a legacy that began in 1901 and has been closely tied to the development of hydroelectric power in Spain. For more than a century, the company has developed and operated dozens of hydroelectric power plants that have supported the country’s energy supply and industrial growth.

Today, the energy transition and new power system operating requirements are driving a major transformation of these facilities. As a result, many conventional hydroelectric generating plants are being upgraded to become more flexible and efficient.

To achieve this, they are incorporating pumped-storage hydropower technologies, enabling renewable energy storage while improving the stability and reliability of the power transmission grid.

As part of this modernization process, electrical protection systems play a critical role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and operational continuity of hydroelectric facilities. Upgrading protection relays, protection schemes, and control systems also requires extensive engineering and coordination to ensure these plants comply with the latest technical and regulatory requirements.

Within this framework, CT Engineering Group has been awarded the Framework Agreement for the modernization of the protection systems at Iberdrola’s hydroelectric power plants. Leveraging its expertise in electrical protection and power generation systems, the company is actively involved in every stage of the project.

CT’s scope of work includes detailed engineering, protection coordination and selectivity studies, functional analyses, support for the implementation of new equipment, and the execution of testing and commissioning activities across the different hydroelectric power plants.

This is not the only Framework Agreement under which CT is contributing to the modernization of Iberdrola’s hydroelectric power plants. The company also provides Control Engineering services and supports the integration of plant monitoring and operation into COHI (Hydroelectric Operations Center).

This collaboration further strengthens CT Engineering Group’s position as a trusted technology partner in the energy sector. It also supports Iberdrola’s continued modernization of its hydroelectric assets, helping to build an increasingly safe, efficient, and sustainable energy system.
