Since 2021, CT Engineering Group has successfully completed the electrical commissioning and protection testing of more than ten data centers across Spain. Our engineers have participated in strategic projects in Madrid, Aragon, and Barcelona for some of the industry’s leading operators, including NTT Data Centers, Merlin Properties, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Digital Realty.

These projects have focused on the validation and commissioning of medium-voltage power distribution systems, which are essential to ensuring the availability and reliability of critical infrastructure supporting cloud services, data storage, and globally deployed digital applications.

As part of the commissioning activities, CT specialists have carried out primary testing on medium-voltage switchgear. This work has included the verification of current transformers (CTs) and voltage transformers (VTs) through transformation ratio, polarity, continuity, and measurement and protection circuit tests.

In addition, electrical insulation testing has been performed to verify the condition of switchgear, busbars, and associated cabling before the facilities were energized.

Testing activities were carried out using OMICRON diagnostic and testing equipment, including the CPC 100 for primary testing and current injection, and the CMC platform for the functional verification of protection and control systems.

One of the most significant aspects of these projects has been the commissioning and validation of multi-vendor protection relays, adapting to the different technologies and standards deployed at each facility. The equipment tested includes protection relays from leading manufacturers such as Schneider Electric, Siemens, and SEL.

The testing program included the verification of critical functions such as:

  • Trip time verification.
  • Protection selectivity and coordination.
  • Verification of trip logic, interlocks, and blocking functions.
  • Validation of signals exchanged with SCADA and BMS systems.

These tests ensure that any fault within the electrical network can be detected and isolated quickly and selectively, minimizing risks to the continuous operation of data centers.

With more than five years of continuous experience in projects of this nature, CT Engineering Group has established itself as a trusted partner for electrical testing and commissioning of critical infrastructure. Through these services, we contribute to the growth, resilience, and reliability of Spain’s leading data center hubs.
